Case Study

Invasive Plant Pests

A glovebox guide for landholders in north west NSW

Client: Joint project with Central West and North West Local Land Services

Local Land Services needed to design and print a glovebox guide for landholders focused on the identification of invasive plant pests.

The 36-page A5 guide covers 21 invasive pest species (including insects, fungi and bacteria) that pose a threat to plant crops of northern NSW.

The guide needed to be clear and accessible for landholders and staff, and delivered in two formats: a high-quality print-ready version and a fully accessible digital version. It also needed to be created in a tight timeframe, and printed in time for AgQuip.

Services

Custom graphic design project, including: design, compliance with NSW Government branding, print-ready artwork delivered to preferred local printer, and web-accessible digital version.

The Process

Working closely with the project team, I:

  • Designed the A5 guide to meet NSW Government branding and accessibility requirements, creating a clean modern, visually appealing design.
  • Edited and refined some of the copy to improve clarity and flow, whilst ensuring it was still technically accurate.
  • Advised on print specifications, recommending durable paper stock and practical binding to ensure the guide holds up to regular use in the paddock (just as intended).

The Deliverables

  • A completely designed guide, aligned with the current NSW Government branding guidelines. The layout is clear and visually engaging, with clear images of the pests and features to help landholders identify them.
  • A high-resolution, print-ready version of the guide, prepared for the chosen printer.
  • A fully accessible PDF version of the guide, suitable for online distribution and compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies.

The Result

The glovebox guide was delivered on time despite a tight turnaround, meeting all NSW government branding and accessibility requirements.

The final product is clear, practical, and tailored to the needs of landholders and staff working across northern NSW.

The project team appreciated the value of working with a rural-based designer who understands their audience and the extension context.

As Neroli shared: “Danielle is a great communicator and was very responsive and respectful to our needs, ensuring the delivery of our product in an extremely short timeframe.”

What I loved about working with the team

I’m always drawn to projects that deliver real and practical, on-ground impact. The specialist biosecurity team I worked with were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, and working with them was a highlight. It was so rewarding to help translate their expertise into a practical, paddock-ready guide.
